City Moves Forward with Waste-to-Energy Program

Published on February 25, 2025

The City of Eustis is set to implement a new Waste-to-Energy (WTE) program, replacing the traditional curbside recycling system, starting the week of March 3, 2025. This initiative follows the approval of the Waste Management (WM) Franchise Agreement by City Commission on Feb. 20, 2025.

The WTE process is recognized by the State of Florida as an approved recycling method. Unlike conventional recycling, this system eliminates the need for sorting materials, as all household waste will be collected together and processed into renewable energy.

“Residents will no longer need to separate household trash, recycling, or yard waste. Collection service days will remain unchanged, ensuring a smooth transition for our community,” said Tom Carrino, City Manager. “By implementing WTE, we are reducing landfill reliance, increasing efficiency and contributing to Florida’s renewable energy production.”

Other municipalities within Lake County, including Leesburg, Mount Dora and The Villages, have already adopted or are in the process of adopting WTE solutions. Eustis is proud to join this regional effort to improve environmental responsibility and energy generation.

While WTE is not a complete replacement for traditional recycling, it provides a viable alternative for managing non-recyclable waste while supporting sustainable practices. This approach minimizes landfill contributions while generating clean energy for the community.

With the WM Franchise Agreement now approved, the City of Eustis will begin educational outreach efforts to inform residents about this transition and how they can adapt to the new waste collection system. Postcards will be mailed to all City residents outlining the changes and decals will be placed on carts.
